A letter a day to number 10. No 971
Sunday 11 January 2015.
Dear Mr Cameron,
Well, I guess I’ve found one pledge you will keep if this country is deluded enough to give you a majority in May or if you can wangle another coalition with parties willing to betray their manifesto promises, their values and the people who voted for them.
You are apparently pledging more legislation to curb the Unions. Given your treatment of us since 2010 I do not doubt that you will do exactly that. You have made it abundantly clear that you do not regard us as human, or even cattle or animal stock, after all no farmer in their right mind would take away the means of survival from stock in order to force them to be obedient to the farmers will. Whilst there are those who are wantonly cruel to animals, there are also laws which protect animals from such cruelty. whereas your government has brought in legislation which enables you to commit obscene acts of cruelty on ordinary people, Iain Duncan Smiths brutal sanctions regime being but one example.
The Unions, like the suffragettes, like Mahatma Gandhi, like Rosa Parks, cannot wait for a top down change that will never come unless it is fought for and forced against you, the establishment.
The time has come for civil disobedience on a grand scale. Anyone who thinks you are a friend to this country is a deluded fool, and any top down Union legislation, like your top down re-organisation of the NHS, will in no way serve the public or workers interest and will be designed to undermine, disrupt and disable the Unions.
There is a quote attributed to Ethan Mordden: “Obeying their rules only encourages them to create new ones. Disobey as often as possible: for gain, for sport, for the art of it…”
It is to be hoped that Unions in the UK will rediscover their roots and the power of voting with their feet. Regardless of any legislation you enact in Parliament or any steps you take to enforce it, our inalienable human right and ability to disobey and to refuse to comply remains sovereign. Two things need to happen in this country, you need to learn that you govern by the consent of the governed and the governed need to stand up and teach you that hard, uncompromising lesson. People should not fear the government, government should fear the people but it seems the people, like the Unions, are a little out of practice.
