Waking up to treachery

17_february_2015A letter a day to number 10. No 1,003

Tuesday 17 February 2015.

Dear Mr Cameron,

There is no such thing as a ‘free market economy’, it is a rigged game, just as there is no such thing as the ‘trickle down effect’, and if there was a trickle down effect that would constitute the greatest insult to the ordinary hard working people of the world. The idea that all we get are the crumbs from the top table, as our due, is an insult so vast it beggars belief.

I was born, raised and educated into this rigged game and I believed that was just the way things were. I believed in the banking system, the markets, pittance wages, a life of endless work getting nowhere. I took it all in, hook, line and sinker. I was born into poverty, my father was around for a few years before being locked up in a mental asylum and I was raised by my mother, a royalist and a deferential Tory voter. The only radical aspect of my young life, though I didn’t know it, was to accept completely that I was destined for the factory and the daily grind while my elders and betters ran the system and knew what was best. The only time I voted Tory was the first time I voted, such was my ignorance.

I have wished many times that I’d been born into the Welsh valleys or the industrial north. I’ve listened jealously to people like Tony Benn and latterly Owen Jones as they so eloquently and with such clarity describe the struggle for social justice. I’ve wished I’d been raised to the struggle and had it explained to me and discussed it from a young age so that it was hard wired into my make up and my consciousness.

My education was a long and protracted one brought about by two things. I had inherited mental illness so I wasn’t going to make it in the crappy system anyway and I was bored brainless and constantly thinking, ‘there has got to be more to life than this’. So I had to take the long road to understanding what the hell was going on and what life was all about, and no regrets, it’s been a good, if hard, journey and I am glad I got the chance to make it.

I am sure you think you are some kind of mover and shaker in the system but actually all you are is a liar and a cheat and not very good at either. You are selling peoples lives short, Mr Cameron, but as long as there are thinking people in the world, you’ll never win and you and your kind will always be opposed. You are more blinkered than I ever was and I wouldn’t swap places with you for all the tea in China, your investment portfolio, an ermine robe or silly title.

We are a nation betrayed by liars and thieves.
