Democide – death by government – an Easter reprise

05_april_2015A letter a day to number 10. No 1,049

Sunday 05 April 2015.

Dear Mr Cameron,

What is abundantly clear now to anyone who has been paying attention is that we are living in a system run by con-men for con-men. Of course the con is so well established, maintained by all the powerful vested interests involved that many are still not wise to the system and, indeed, defend it to the hilt. But a con is a con no matter how well it is covered up or spun.

As I began to realise that making work pay meant making everyone who isn’t working poorer, if not destitute, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, at least, it beggared belief, it was a staggering concept. You announced in 2011 you would “slash £5.5bn from the welfare bill in real terms over the next four years” so that “We’re finally going to make work pay – especially for the poorest people in society”, claiming, “We’re not just recasting the reach, scope and effectiveness of the old system – making it fairer and a genuine ladder of opportunity for everyone. We’re also doing something no government has done before – and that is get to grips with the cost of welfare.” Yep, demonise poor, sick and disabled people and drive them into destitution, that’s your genuine ladder of opportunity.

You claim to have created 1000 jobs a day over the your term of office when, of course, you have done no such thing. What you have done is weakened the job market for workers so much that zero hours contracts, low pay, no pay is driving people into work poverty and the latest attacks on welfare are aimed specifically at workers by sanctioning in-work tax credits and Housing Benefits.

In fact, again in 2011, you unveiled a white paper spelling the end of state provision, the only exceptions being national security, frontline policing and the judiciary. Everything else was up for grabs, very much including our NHS and you were advised to allow “schools and hospitals to fail if the government is to succeed in its overhaul of public services”.

You said, “The old narrow, closed, state monopoly is dead” and you were, “releasing the grip of state control and putting power in people’s hands”. Yes, private hands, profiteering hands, corporate hands, boardroom hands. You have really put the con in Conservative and ordinary people have paid for this with their lives.

Democide is the murder of any person or people by their government, including “intentionally or knowingly reckless and depraved disregard for life”; this brings into account many deaths arising through various neglects and abuses, such as forced mass starvation”. If you are allowed another term in office and Osbornes’ £12 billion in welfare cuts goes ahead we will be measuring the impact with our lives. As someone who will, in all probability, be counted amongst your dead if enough fools vote for you, I take enormous personal exception to dying for liars, con-men and fools.
