A letter a day to number 10. No 1,129
Friday 26 June 2015.
Dear Mr Cameron,
One nation, eh Mr Cameron? One nation divided by the Tories.
I don’t know whether you noticed, but somewhere up to 250,000 people had something to say about your ideological austerity the other day in London and DPAC visited Parliament during PMQs this week to express their displeasure at your cutting the Independent Living Fund and Charlotte Church seems to have single handedly ignited the underpants of Tory trolls across the nation and the ridiculous Louise Mensch in particular for having the effrontery to speak out against your ideological austerity war being waged against the poor.
If George Osborne goes ahead and drops the top rate of income tax from 45p to 40p whilst going ahead with his proposed £12 billion in welfare cuts, nothing could more graphically declare your disdain for every death, every food parcel, every eviction from the vile bedroom tax and every injustice being heaped upon the poorest and most vulnerable people in the nation.
DWP figures reveal that since 2010 500,000 more children have fallen into poverty bringing the current number to 4.1 million, just as you conveniently want to redefine poverty to take in such things as worklessness, debt and addiction and the Torygraph throws in mental illness for good measure. The very last person to be trusted to redefine poverty is someone with a vested interest in lowering the figures and with a track record of blaming and punishing the poor for poverty.
Iain Duncan Smith may well think its disgraceful that 229,145 people have signed a petition calling for him to publish the statistics showing how many people have died after their benefits were stopped and MPs are asking the same in the house, yet he is the architect of misery and the man responsible for turning a social lifeline into a punitive system of benefit denial.
It is my fervent hope that this country will erupt in protest the like of which it will never, ever, be necessary to see again to make it perfectly clear that the Tories and your austerity are unacceptable in a civilised nation.
