Iain Duncan Smith is an affront to life

03_march_2016A letter a day to number 10. No 1,360

Thursday 03 March 2016.

Dear Mr Cameron,

Iain Duncan Smith’s affront at the intervention of the House of Lords over his draconian cuts to the support for future ESA claimants is, whilst predictable, an affront to the nation. What it reveals is his utter contempt for any form of democratic process and accountability and his contempt for the will of the people.

Whatever the shortcomings of the second house, one of which is that it is elected by privilege and not democratic vote, a process that you clearly support having sent, according to the Guardian, 244 people to the Lords since becoming prime minister, it serves as a vital check on government policies.

Smith can throw as many toys out of his pram as he likes, but you can’t have it both ways. Either we have some process of democratic accountability or we have a dictatorship, which is clearly what Smith wants in his personal crusade against the most vulnerable people in Britain.

Smith’s argument for cutting ESA seems to be based solely on a cost cutting exercise with complete disregard for the suffering his policies are causing to sick and disabled people.

Disabled people have been disproportionately targeted for the most draconian cuts, nineteen times more than the average citizen and with no end in sight. Cuts are being imposed brutally and without a shred of compassion.

Your government has given tax breaks to the rich and austerity to the poor. George Osborne famously said in his 2015 summer budget speech, “So those who oppose any savings to Tax Credits will have to explain how on earth they propose to eliminate the deficit, let alone run a surplus and pay down debt.” The poor must pay, eh, Mr Cameron?

Thirty pounds is clearly a trivial amount to Smith, he happily spends more than that on a single breakfast, but it is a lifeline to disabled people.

Iain Duncan Smith is unfit to hold office, his lack of care or consideration for the suffering he causes and his histrionics at any attempt to hold him to account speaks volumes. His reign of brutality is a blight on Britain and an affront to life itself.
