Dear Mr Cameron,
Ordinary people (with a minority of exceptions accepted) are so used to gruel it has become axiomatic that whatever we are offered on any issue, in any circumstance, it will adhere to the gruel standard. Even had Oliver Twist’s request for more fallen on sympathetic ears it is ludicrous to suppose he would have been offered any more than an extra crust. As it was, of course, those who held themselves to be his masters and betters were morally outraged, leading the gentleman in the white waistcoat to say, ‘I never was more convinced of anything in my life, than I am that that boy will come to be hung’.
The idea that I should ‘know my place’ does not come from me or my class, it comes from you and your class. It’s true enough that I prefer a greasy spoon, ‘bacon, egg, sausage, beans and fried slice and a mug of tea’, that’s part of my class and social heritage, but I am not shamed by that and it has nothing to do with me knowing my place or any moral constraint the I should never get above myself. The idea and the culture of privilege is held and maintained by the privileged and the conservative rigidity of class division.
Finding your self now without a leg to stand on is not our doing, any more than the damned deficit was any of our doing, but by god you’ve made damned sure we paid.
You haven’t shot yourself in the foot over your tax arrangements, you’ve blown your own fool legs off. You may, perhaps, think of us as the braying masses demanding your resignation, after all, how dare the ‘stock’, as the DWP refers to us, make demands of the Prime Minister? Who do we think we are?
Your ridiculous denials and obfuscations over the course of this week ended with your admission that you sold your shares in Blairmore Holdings Inc, before the 2010 general election, so that you could be known as a straight up honest guy and not, in your own words, someone who had been involved in something “frankly and morally wrong”. You had shares held in an offshore tax haven and I doubt we’ve yet heard the whole truth of the matter as you are a compulsive, pathological, liar, as you have so ably proved for six long years.
In the light of the Panama papers revelations, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has demanded any information that UK banks hold about any dealings with Mossack Fonseca, giving them 10 days to respond. Mossack Fonseca is the world’s ‘fourth biggest offshore law firm’. You’ll have to excuse my cynicism, but what the hell has the FCA being doing this last three years since it inception in 2012? Jumping on the bandwagon now, demanding information on only the fourth biggest offshore firm, is really just chucking a few shreds of meat in the gruel pot to appease the masses. This entire farrago is a just business as usual from a system designed by the wealthy, for the wealthy, and we’ve had enough. Demanding your resignation is just a beginning, not an end. The door is merely ajar and we must do everything we can to force it wide open.
